Philippines school shooting leaves at least three dead, including gunman

A quiet afternoon turned into a scene of chaos in the town of Banga, South Cotabato, when a teenage student opened fire on his classmates on Friday. The shooting left three people dead, including the sixteen year old suspected gunman who reportedly took his own life after the attack. At least eight other students, ranging from fourteen to seventeen years old, were injured during the rampage, with four remaining in critical condition as they fight for their lives in local hospitals.

According to Mayor Albert Palencia, the tragedy was preceded by a chilling warning that went ignored. The suspect allegedly told his friends shortly before lunch to go home because he planned to execute something after the break. His peers reportedly laughed off the comment, believing it was simply another joke from a classmate known for his sense of humor. Once lunch ended, however, the teenager began shooting, hitting ten students before turning the weapon on himself. While official reports focus on one gunman, conflicting accounts emerged via social media where a teacher claimed there may have been two attackers involved.

This latest violence marks the third deadly school shooting in the Philippines since June, highlighting a disturbing trend in educational settings across the archipelago. In August, a similar horror unfolded in Zamboanga when a student livestreamed the murder of a peer followed by his own suicide. This follows an even larger massacre in Tacloban back in June, where two students opened fire at a public high school, leaving three dead and twenty others wounded.

In response to these recurring tragedies, Governor Reynaldo Tamayo and local officials are calling for stricter guardianship of weapons within the home. Despite nationwide shooter drills and tighter government regulations requiring psychological evaluations for gun owners, authorities argue that institutional security can only do so much. They emphasize that preventing such horrors begins with parents ensuring firearms are stored securely and kept entirely out of reach of minors to prevent impulsive acts of devastation.
