Martha-Ann Alito, the wife of Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito, referred to the upside-down US flag as a “signal of distress” in a November 2021 Facebook post. According to the US Flag Code, an upside-down American flag is not a disrespectful gesture but a sign of severe danger to life or property. In the post, she did not make it clear whom or what she was implying was in distress. The post created some controversy due to its possible political interpretations.
